Session 8 Overview

The ICBIEP process aims to situate Disability as an identity, not a burden. In order to determine what supports and strategies students need, the process looks at needs, not disabilities, as a reference point. In this way, planning for inclusive classes can be universal, and anticipate needs in a community.

In this session we will connect ICBIEPs to these kinds of Universal Design for Learning principles and talk about how an ICBIEP designed for a student with disabilities can be used as a blueprint for supporting all students in a classroom.

Our guest is Dr. Julie Causton, a fourteen-year professor in the Inclusive and Special Education Program in the Department of Teaching and Leadership at Syracuse University. Dr. Causton is guided in her teaching, research, and consulting by a passion for inclusive education. She is an expert in school reform, inclusive teacher training, collaboration, humanistic behavioural supports, lesson planning, and providing invisible adult supports.
