Session 5 Overview

What are “life skills”, and are they still relevant?

Inclusive education is striving to evolve and balance life skills in a student’s educational program in meaningful and authentic ways. When we look at what life skills are needed for success in today’s (and tomorrow’s) diverse society, we can see alignment with the competencies that all students need to develop. These competencies are reforming curricula worldwide! Competency-based goals focus on 21st century learning skills including collaboration, self-regulation, social responsibility and even joyfulness. The ICBIEP is shifting the IEP goal bank for students with disabilities away from “50’s housewife skills” and towards linking and engaging all students in being a part of co-constructing goals that will develop engaged and successful citizens for life.

Our guests are Christine and Parker Danroth. Christine is a support teacher and a parent to Parker, a self-advocate with Autism who joins us to share his IEP goals for the year and how he is involved in the process.
